Although many companies are now in the service-related industry, it is shocking how many fail to provide the most basic and simple service. Do these two things, and you’ll probably have a customer for life.
1. Say hello.
2. Genuinely thank the customer.
It really is that simple. But, as simple as that is, very few do it.
These two little acts make a huge impact on how the customer feel about you and your company. Don’t do it and you just become part of the mix like everyone else.
Have you ever walked into a store needing help yet having sales clerks around you who seemed indifferent and less than enthusiastic about helping you? For a dear friend’s birthday, I went to a local store to buy her an ensemble of adorable items. To my surprise, the store was empty of shoppers and the sales people were completely disinterested. It was bizarre. I practically had to beg someone to allow me to make the purchase. When I asked for a gift box the clerk looked at me as if I’d lost my mind asking such a question. “We don’t have boxes large enough for all of this”, the lady exclaimed. As she proceeded to bundle up my items and toss them into a bag, I recalled needing something else and asked her where to locate it, her response was to point in the opposite direction for me to figure out where the item might be. At no time did she thank me just as she had not bothered to welcome me to the store. But she was not the only one. Department after department within this same store, people were more interested in speaking with each other rather than addressing the few customers who bothered to shop.
Guess where I won’t shop for the next series of gifts I need to buy?
Here’s the reality, that major retailer is not the only one. There seems to be apathy and a clear lack of enthusiasm in business. No one seems to want to do what they are doing and it shows. So, be enthusiastic, welcoming and thankful and you will be a shining beacon and the first source your customer remembers the next time they need something.
Isn’t this such an easy way to market your business while doing very little?
